I seen some nail artist using this handy dandy tool, and decided to try it myself. What I thought I will have here is some kind denser foam, but what I got is silicone head...
Each end came with two replacement heads, and they are slightly different. One end is almost perfectly rounded, while other side is slightly conical, and have slightly pointed tip.
When I opened the packaging, I was pretty sceptical about how could this possibly work... I gave it a try, and as with everything else, practice make perfect. Reason I wanted to try this is for a radial gradient.
My nails are on the small side, and by the time I paint the bulls eye on the piece of sponge, most is lost on me, and then there is a placement of the sponge - how on earth you place it in the perfect middle... see my dilemma?
At first, I found hard silicone surface hard to dab, and this might work better for gel polish, as you do not have to worry about smudging or lifting up the layers below.
I used both ends for my manicure, and I was somewhat successful.
I started with beautiful purple that was on my untried list by Sparitual - Instinct.
On my ring finger and thumb, I started my radial gradient by dabbing La Femme - Preciosa (silver holo). I placed few drops on my mat, then dipped rounded end of the tool, and then dabbed it over my nails.
Next color I used is La Femme - Amarelo (bright yellow crème). I used the same technique, but my area (circle) was smaller than one before.
Finally, I used La Femme - Rosa (neon pink). I switched the side of the tool, and instead of dull, rounded end, I used slightly pointy end. I wanted that central dot to be quite small.
This tool allowed me to target the area I wanted that gradient to be, and I have to admit, it was tricky in the beginning. Eventually, I achieved the best blend when I blend colors before they were dry on my nail.
That is why I think this would work wonderful for gels.
This is definitely kind of tool I would not recommend to beginners, and it felt really weird if you are used to soft transition of the sponge gradient.
There is lots of practice ahead of me. Tool was really easy to clean. I wiped it with towel, and whatever was left, I just dabbed over lint roller. I guess, you could use a tape to clean it too. As with stamping heads, I am afraid that acetone would speed up decaying process.
You know that I love to try different things, and I love when I find a second purpose for every item. I had to try if this round head would work as a stamper, to pick up small images... sadly, it did not work. If that worked, this tool would be much used on my desk.
Finally, I went ahead and stamped lantern image over my gradient. I was so excited that my idea of radial gradient worked, that I totally forgot to take a photo of the gradient stage... sorry.
Lantern image is on JQ-04, and I used DRK Nails - Extra Black for stamping.
This is how finished manicure looked.
