Black mirror over black polish - seen them and I was not really taken by them. I am aware that chrome finish is really hard to photograph, trust me I do know...
This can be used over gel base, which is recommended for all of the powders, as gel surface is so smooth, it will give you the best results. I did not use gel here. I used regular polish, and before I applied the polish, I applied ridge filler, so my nails would be as smooth as they can be.
I already mentioned that application over black is boring, and you know that I always like to try a different approach. I am also so fed up with winter, that am refusing to pull out black polish...
I applied medium to light grey polish with a slight green undertone, and polish of the choice was Nicole by OPI - Goodbye shoes.
I applied protection around the nail area for easier clean up, and for that I used Bliss Kiss - Simply Peel.
Using the applicator supplied with powder, using a small quantity of powder, I rubbed it over the dry nail polish.
Polish become slightly darker, and less green, which was great improvement color wise. Thing is, I did not see the chrome finish. Yes, it was really reflective, but I would not call it mirror per say... I truly expected to be wowed. If you are after chrome finish, you are better off with any other color. They will leave you with your jaw hanging. This one missed that WOW factor, at least for me. On the other hand, if you are after something less flashy, this is right product for you.
I often apply powders without protection, but I would totally recommend it for this product - Because it is so dark, it is harder to clean, and any residue around the nail will be visible. Powders are usually easily cleaned with rubbing alcohol and cotton, but you are rubbing really fine grit dust around, and fine dust finds the way to get into tightest of the places...
Digression aside, this was really reflective, and I regret not taking the photos before I applied top coat.
While ago, I purchased UNT - Ready to take off - sticky base coat, as I seen many nail artist use it over the foil and chrome powder to preserve the finish. I might of picked the wrong time to try another product, and that might perceive all of this experience in negative light...
You are supposed to brush UNT base coat over the powder, and that would present itself as a barrier between the nail powder and top coat, so that way your finish will not change. In theory. Off of the bat, this slightly clouded mirror finish, which spin tailed me into a panic mode. Then, it reacted with my regular top coat, and I used Seche - Fast Dry top coat - It become sticky and stringy and difficult to use.
I was ready to throw in the towel. but it was getting late, and I needed manicure for work so I just put up with it. If that doesn't bother you, I have to admit that worked, and regular top coat did not make chrome powder 'grainy' looking. This is how this looked in the end.
You know, that disaster with UNT threw me totally off. If you wondered if other sticky base coat would work, I did tried with Yellow Stopper and did not work. Yellow Stopper did not look like enough of the barrier, so when you applied the top coat, it would dissolve it all, and your mirror finish would be lost, and all would look like you applied regular nail polish. It does look much better with UNT, I was just not ready for goopyness afterwards. I do own couple of other brands of sticky base coat that I need to try, and I will let you know how that worked for me,
I went with a double the chrome here for the nail art, and I decided to use Winstonia - Silver Bullet as a stamping polish. Just occurred to me - Gunmetal and Silver Bullet - isn't it just funny how our brain connect the dots before are we even aware of them. Image is from YZW-No.2
